Rideshares & Taxis
Not recommended from the airport. Rideshares (ie Uber) and taxis are available at the airports, but tend to be more expensive and less reliable than pre-arranged shuttles or drivers. Agree on fares beforehand if using any taxis to avoid confusion.
Car Rentals
Not recommended or necessary. Wedding events will be within walking distance from the center of town and transportation will be provided to and from the wedding ceremony. Parking in San Miguel is extremely limited, and it is not recommended to drive in surrounding unfamiliar areas. If necessary to drive within town, Uber is easily available and recommended.
GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS
PASSPORT
Don't forget to bring your valid passport! While the Mexican government requires that your passport be valid for the duration of your stay, some airlines may adhere to the U.S. rule requiring passports to have at least six months validity from the date of entry (ie, a passport expiring on or before August 13, 2026). To avoid any travel disruptions, please verify the passport requirements with your airline(s) before departure.
POWER CONVERTERS & ADAPTERS
Guests from North America do not need a power converter, as Mexico uses the standard 110V, the same as the US and Canada. However, international guests may need a voltage converter due to the different standards.
In addition to voltage considerations, all guests should check if they need a plug adapter. Mexican outlets typically accept American two-prong flat pins. If your device uses a different plug type, such as a three-prong plug or an international plug, you will need an adapter to use those electronics in Mexico.
TIPPING
Tipping is customary and appreciated in Mexico.
In restaurants, a tip of 15-20% is standard, and you can tip in either dollars or pesos.
For smaller services like taxis or cafes, rounding up or adding a small amount in pesos is also appreciated.
For other services rendered (ie, help with luggage, housekeeping), 25-50 pesos per day is recommended.
For tour guides, it is recommended to tip your guide 10-20% of the tour cost, or a minimum of 60-100 pesos per day for
WATER SAFETY
It's best to drink bottled water during your stay. Avoid ice unless you are certain it is made from purified water (ie, at a high-quality hotel or restaurant). Stay clear of drinking tap water.
PROPER SHOES
San Miguel is a highly walkable city and most people prefer to walk everywhere. Part of it’s charm includes its cobblestone streets which, while beautiful, can be tricky to navigate—especially if you don't have the right shoes. We highly recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes as you explore. Save heels for the day-of wedding venue!
SAFETY TIPS
San Miguel de Allende is known for being a very safe destination with little to no crime. There are no restrictions on travel from the U.S. government in Guanajuato state, which includes San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato City, and surrounding areas. However, as with any travel, please exercise common sense.
